1 DGDARC and you on Tue Oct 21, 2008 7:57 pm

I don't know what you people have heard about DGDARC, but we like to poll about what you would like to see from us, and what we can do to help you, the forum, or the GMT study as a whole.

Just looking for ideas since we don't regularly come across master students.

We are a rarity I suppose.

First of all I think I speak for most when I say that the GMT program has been, if nothing else, a let down for us with its lack of organizations, communication, and events. I do not know how the matters are with dutch students or with the bachelors students, but DGDARC definitely has the base status to change this.

First of all I think that there is no point in jumping into big projects and ambitious undertakings. People will eventually start their own initiatives once a common ground for sharing geeky things has been provided. If they do not, then something can be thought of to incite them to start like a gaming contest (but this must come much later than a possible get together event). Such an initiative will endure longer too since people will start getting together for social causes rather than undertaking extra chores.

All that is needed for this is a simple event calendar to be displayed online and nothing more. Even google calendar would be perfect. Preferably in English too. The next step would be to come up with events. Geeky t-shirt event at oude pothuis for example. Cyberpunk movie marathon, or a trivia get together to give away two tickets to a gaming event in amsterdam. I do not really know. Anything will do I guess. And a staple event would be of preference: for example each first wednesday of the month can very much be an official DGDARC go to a pub and get drunk like a true escapist night (that was evelyn's idea if I am correct Very Happy) which will keep the relations alive on a regular basis.

I think you have one masters student group member already, but you can try to recruit more from the GMT at the beginning of each year since DGDARC and the GMT are very important for each other. Come to think of it, you must do that, because GMT is about gaming right? If you do not do it GMT is very unlikely to come up with a student organization by itself given the obvious reasons, and there is actually much DGDARC can get from GMT and vice versa.

well this is my feedback so far Smile I hope you will consider it, and cheers.

As chairman of DGDARC I hope to make things more clear for you. (although I'm not quite sure anyone will read this.)
I admit that the communication with you guys has been poor. DGDARC has been very busy, so we couldn't be as active on this forum as we wanted to be.
We are focusing on bachelor students at this moment. But we want to help master students as well.
I understand most GMT master students want to socialize. Our "parent" Sticky wants to help you with that. DGDARC is more for the game creation part. I understand there have been plans for a movie-night, but it didn't work out. I will contact Sticky to remember them of your wish for socializing, and hopefully another event will come soon. If you want to speed things up, contact them yourselves!
As for DGDARC in this story:
- We will translate (a part of) our website in English.
- Our room with development PC's, books and more is free to use for you. Please contact us at (dgdarc at stickyutrecht.nl) to schedule something.
- If people are interested, we can organize an English Game Jam for master students (a Game Jam is non-stop brainstorming/working on a game in a group, it can last between 5 and 48 hours). Interested? contact us at the above e-mail address.

I hope I've informed you enough. Feel free to ask any questions.

this is great news, I am already in contact with Kees, and reorganizing the movie event thing to be on 16th of december. I am sort of confused though is this a sticky event or a DGDARC event?
Anyways your propositions sound really nice. If help is needed with the website just let us know. Also we definitely should do this gamejam event, although later in the year I guess, so that people get to know each other a little bit (provided that this initiative holds up of course).

i think a clear message should be: lets unite, but let everyone has freedom to express. i hope DGDARC do not see GMT forum as critique against STICKY or any other student organizations.

still, i think the forum is a good way to identify the people from the major. as well as international MSc students from the rest of the majors, as we all know how everything is so relevant to game programming.

btw last year DGDARC was like in a clinical-death state, I saw however much of lecture-talks/presentations this fall. GOOD JOB!

I want to make clear that DGDARC is a committee of Sticky at this moment. This might not be clear for everyone. A few years ago DGDARC was independent, hence the possible confusion.

@darkmoose: the border for that kind of events is not clear. In this case DGDARC is organizing a "console borrel" (playing games and chatting a bit under the comfort of a beer) on December 16th. Any additional movie-things are not organized by DGDARC. In general, DGDARC organizes all game-making events, and a part of the game-playing events.
Thanks for offering help on the website, I'll let you know if you can help Smile.

@spesho: We see this forum only as a good thing Smile
it's a great initiative, too bad about the lack of activity, though.
and thanks for the heads up! Very Happy
