OK folks,
i have just tried to enjoy the commodities a client-mail-app can give you. Yet to my surprise I found out that i can only read my email but not use the SMTP server for sending mail. So this prevents me to do anything but use the crappy WEB interface

also I would appreciate some info on how to setup my general UU account student.name@uu.nl not the CS department one.

ALSO you need to define your own spam filter. I am planing to do so, i think it is enough of these CASINO deals i got every day!!! Will post a step-by-step walkthrough on the topic of spam control. if successful;)

First, since cs.uu is imap, you can use your own provider its smtp server for sending mail. Second, what you just have to do with your general uu email address, is forward all mail to your cs.uu account, or visa versa (whatever suits you). You can access this general account by webmail through osiris (www.myuu.nl).

If you log on via VPN, you can send e-mails through smtp.students.cs.uu.nl. You need this to log in to the WLAN-UU network when on campus anyway, so it's pretty nifty to have installed.

I haven't looked in to installing it via Vista yet, but you can find instructions for all platforms here.

As for your Solis mail, here are the correct server settings:

POP:
server=Solis-mail.uu.nl
port=110
username=[STUDENT_ID]
tls=tls if available
secure=no

SMTP:
server=Solis-mail.uu.nl
port=25
username=[STUDENT_ID]
tls=tls if available
secure=no

Do NOT use the long-form Solis username; only the student number suffices. Your password is your normal Solis password.

yes I do but dont think that I really need it. I never managed to go through with CISCO client and authentication.

I can use smtp.student.cs.uu.nl from home without VPN (on port 587, 'TLS if available').
