1 Player Emotions on Fri Oct 10, 2008 12:58 am

It was one of those nights when I was having coffee with my friends at a local pub. Thats where we make sure to brainstorm ideas and concepts for the game that we all believe is gonna be the dream RPG. People have given names, ideas and concepts as well as numerous criticisms. But as time has progressed it has come to my understanding that the ideas which are pitched in are getting far more mature and often very innovative. Be it the son of god being the main game AI and hence the Christ\anti-Christ game or be it the rpg with the main character suffering from a multiple personality syndrome, we have thought of 'em all (well almost). All the possibilities on the exploration of the epitome of cyberpunk concepts were pitched in.

In all these phases from my understanding, a game requires to simulate a state of mind which best engages the player in a specific emotion, be it anger, frustration, happiness, sadness, love, hatred or just pure insanity during its game-play. This poses as one of the biggest challenges to the designers of the game. While the script writers work on the right game story, the market analysts take a look at the target audience. The state of mind which sells more is the one the story board is based on (most of the time). Yet, there are certain states of mind in every person - which I personally cannot hate, yet having it in a game seems unlikely. The question is is it unlikely? Or something never tried before?

I am talking about a feeling of one-ness. The feeling that one goes through while he constantly stares at the fire-place, or watches the water in the pond form ripples when a stone in thrown in and so on. Is it really possible to have a level of immersion in a game which can bring such a feeling to the player? I personally think that would be the something quite interesting. A dramatic ending to a story, or probably a part of the story?

PS : Blogger traces out christ (without a capital c) as an error ;P
